Purpose:
The Great Commission tells us: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20 NIV)
Discipleship Training is one way Calvary Church obeys that instruction. The first part is to “make disciples” – to “go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” (Mark 16:15) What good news? “Repentance and forgiveness of sins” (Luke 24:47). Christ, the very Son of God, has come into our world, walked among us, died on the cross so that our sins might be forgiven, and was raised from the dead so that we might be saved from the penalty of sin and have a loving relationship with the holy God. That’s the good news! Disciples are simply followers of Jesus – those who believe in and trust Him.
Baptism is the first step of obedience for those who believe in Jesus. In baptism, the believer identifies with Christ’s death and resurrection. In baptism, the believer is willing to trust Jesus enough to demonstrate to others that he/she is a believer.
Then discipleship training continues with “teaching them to obey everything [Jesus] commanded" the first disciples. Baptism is not the last thing a believer does, it is the first. The lessons on how to live a life pleasing to God, which also is a life of fulfillment, come as we make Christ master of every area of our life, study the Scriptures together, pray together, come to love other believers, and share the love of Christ with others.
God’s goal is that believers (God’s people) are prepared for “works of service, so that the body of Christ [the church] may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Eph. 4:12-13). Discipleship training is one part of how Calvary Church helps believers aim for that goal.
Process:
There are a number of different ways Calvary Church provides Discipleship Training. On the side you will see some of the regular opportunities. In addition, we offer various courses that are specifically meant to train disciples. Look for announcements of these.
