REACTION: College & Career

Dearest friends, you were always so careful to follow my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away you must be even more careful to put into action God's saving work in your lives, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.   Philippians 2:12-13

The Act of Being Thankful

by: Jose Bernardo

1 Chronicles 16:8-12

1. Call upon His name (v8)
            Romans 10:13-14
This is the first thing you should do when you are giving thanks to the Lord
Acknowledging who He is & believing in Him
2.  Make known His deeds among the people (v8); tell everyone about His wonderful deeds (v9)
Ways to make His deeds known:
Praises! (answered prayers shared with others)
                        Your testimony
Luke 17:14-15 (loud/shouting the praises of God)
3. Sing unto Him; sing praises to Him (v9)
1 Chronicles 16:4-6 (they were having a worship night)
            Psalms 150:4-5
Opportunities to do that:
                        Sunday morning worship
                        Worship nights
                        In my car
                        At home
4. Have a joyful heart (rejoicing) (v10)
            Philippians 4:4
            Our rejoicing should never cease
Joy – an emotion of happiness, being glad and taking delight
5. Seek the Lord and His strength, seek His face continually (v11)
your “face” has 2 main things:
                        emotion to communicate
                        to be recognized or identified
            to seek His face:
Him read His word
Hebrews 4:12
Psalms 119:11
Matthew 4:4, 7, 10 (Jesus was quoting scripture to fight Satan)
Go to church
            Exodus 20:8
            It’s not an option
Home group/Bible study/etc.
            Hebrews 10:23-35
6. Remember His marvelous works & the rulings He has given (v12)
            Philippians 4:8
What can we be thankful for?
                        6.798 billion people on earth
If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, a place to sleep, then you are richer than 75% of the world.
If you have a roof over your head, a place to sleep and running water, you are richer than 80% of the world.
If you have money in the bank, or wallet or at your house, you are richer than 92% of the world.
If you have your own computer, you are richer than 99% of the world.
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more fortunate than the million people that will die today.
If you are not in a war, being tortured or in hunger, you are better off than 700 million people in the world.
1/3 of the people in the world cannot access the Bible.
If you can read, you are ahead of 2 billion people in the world.
If you can attend a church meeting without being harassed, arrested, tortured or killed, you are more blessed than 3 billion people in the world.
            STOP CRYING!
It’s easy to do the right thing here in American because we are so blessed and it is legal.

Peter (Continued) - Monday, November 16, 2009

Peter (con’t)

Are great leaders born? Or made?

Who was his brother? Andrew

What kind of Fisher was he? Net (small fish i.e. sardines), hook (i.e. barbell fish – easy fish to catch), Musht fish called St. Peter’s fish (fry fish)

John 6:9; Matthew 17:27; John 1:44; Mark 1:21-29; Matthew 11:20-24

He was married.

Luke 4:38; 1 Corinthians 9:5

Peter was the leader! God blessed him with the leadership abilities and Jesus mentored him into that role. Not one speaks or is spoken to more in the Gospels that Peter. Jesus speaks to Peter: encouraging him, rebuking him, calling him Satan, etc. No one confessed/acknowledged Jesus’ Lordship more than Peter. No one denied him more than Peter.

Peter was impulsive. Peter tried to cut off the head of a soldier arresting Jesus, but by the grace of God, only an ear is cut off. Jesus healed the soldier’s ear.

God took the “raw materials” that made up Peter and used them in combination with the right life experience to create the leader he was called to be.

The 3 Key characteristics that made Peter the leader he became:

Inquisitive, Initiative, Involvement.

Peter was very curious. He questioned everything – both good and bad. Peter took initiative! Calm down Peter. It’s not now time; it’s wow time! Whatever was going on, Peter was always there, getting in the middle of it.

Matthew 15:15; Luke 12:41 Matthew 19:27; Mark 11:21; John 21:20-22; Matthew 16:13; Matthew 26:47; Mark14:43; Luke 22:47; Matthew 14: 26; John 18:15; Luke 22:61

Peter - Monday, November 09, 2009

“Peter”

Luke 6:14

Why the two names? He is sometimes referred to as Simon, other times Peter, or Simon Peter. Peter means: a piece of a rock, or stone

John 1:42 – the first meeting of Jesus and Simon and He changes his name. Jesus knew Peter before he was in his mother’s womb. Peter was a nickname for Simon from Jesus. Simon represents the old man, and Peter is the new man in Christ.

James 1:8

Jesus took the rashness of Peter and made it into boldness. He took the instability and turned it into stability.

Material items are referred to as “Simon’s _____”

When he is mature, he is referred to as “Peter” (in Acts he is not referred to as Simon)

Luke 5:5 (Simon); 8 (Simon Peter)

Luke 22:31 Mark 14:37-38

The apostle John knew Peter, they were life long friends, and in the Gospel of John he refers to him 15 times as Simon Peter.

2 Peter 1:1 he refers to himself as Simon Peter. Possibly he was battling with himself. Peter becomes more humble with time. 1 Peter 1:1 he calls himself Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, but 2 Peter 1:1 he refers to himself as Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ.

Acts 10:32   Matthew 28:7    John 21:3; 15-19 (Jesus restores his relationship with Peter and as a leader of the disciples) That was the last time Jesus called him Simon.

Peter & the 12 Disciples - Monday, October 19, 2009
Peter & the 12 Disciples
“The apostles with a foot-shaped mouth” – John MacArthur

Luke 22:31-32

The 12 Disciples
Matthew 10:2-4
Mark 3:16-19
Luke 6:13-16
Acts 1:13 (no more Judas, he is dead)
The list always starts with Peter. Why? He is the leader of the group after Jesus.

The 12 are grouped into 3 groups:
Peter, Andrew, James, John
Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas
James, Simon (Thaddeus), Judas (Simon) & Judas Iscariot
The name listed first is the leader of that group.

John 1:35-42 (group 1) This group was with Jesus for the longest time and they were closest to Him.

Luke 6:14
Simon was a common name in the New Testament: Matthew 13:55; 6:7; 26:6; etc.
(7 Simons in the Gospel)

Peter – means rock/stone
He was dependable (in a good and bad way)

Luke 22:31

Apostles Intro - Sunday, October 11, 2009
Apostles
Luke 6:13-16

Disciple: follows the teachings of someone; a learner; someone who studies the person they want to know more about

Apostle: teacher, saw Christ, given a commission from God, ambassador, representative, has authority

What did they do? They corrected the church, healed, wrote, did miracles, etc.

Jesus hand picked the original 12 and Paul.

Revelations 21:14 - 12 apostles (Paul included replacing Judas)
2 Corinthians 8:23 – Paul wrote this as having authority from Christ.
Mark 3:14 – Jesus appointed them and sent them out
Hebrews 3:1 – Jesus was an apostle because he was appointed by God
1 Peter 1:20 – Jesus was chosen by God
Luke 10:16 – Jesus was sent by God
Romans 11:13 – Christ appointed Paul as an apostle
Galatians 2:8 – Paul announces himself as an apostle

Story of Saul’s conversion to Paul – Acts 9:3-19; Acts 26:16-18

Acts 1:21-22; 10:41-42
Galatians 2:9
2 Corinthians 12:12 (miracles and signs)
Hebrews 2:3-4
1 Corinthians 9:2

2 Corinthians 10:8; 13:10
There are no apostles today, but there are ministries fulfilled today that are apostolic in nature, like a pastor, but they are not apostles. The Holy Spirit fills the role of revelations therefore eliminating the need for an apostle.

GOD Alone - Monday, October 05, 2009
“God Alone”

The most important “sola!”

Isaiah 42:8; 43:6-7
Exodus 14
Romans 1:18-32 “a snapshot of the wrath of God against the world”
John 12:36-44
Isaiah 66:16-24 (v18 & 19 you see God preserving His remnant)

God’s glory is the Highest. We were made to glorify Him. God and God alone saves us! God cannot be God and share His glory with anyone else. His creation cries out His glory.

Basic sin of humanity: not recognizing God for who He is. We should count it a blessing to give glory to God. We are Christians first, Americans second.

We are here today and gone tomorrow. Our lives are a vapor. But GOD is constant and will remain forever.

Our purpose: to know God and make Him known.

Christ Alone - Monday, September 21, 2009
“Christ Alone”

2 Corinthians 5:21 “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Old Covenant: sacrifices; Day of Atonement once a year made by the High Priest

New Covenant: Christ, He was the last High Priest; He paid the price and atoned for our sins.

Now we have direct access to God through Christ. Christ fulfilled 3 roles: last Prophet, last High Priest and the last King.

1 Peter 2:22 (Isaiah 53:9)
Leviticus 11:45
Psalms 18:30
Matthew 3:13-15
Romans 4:1-12

SCRIPTURE ALONE - Monday, September 21, 2009

“Scripture Alone”

Why is Scripture alone important? No one can add to it or change it. If someone says something is from God but it contradicts the Bible, you can be sure it is not from God.

In the Bible, Jesus calls out the “religious” elders on the fact that they cannot see who He is because they don’t even know the Scripture. Jesus always takes them back to the Scripture. If Scripture isn’t the final authority, than what are we all under? The Bible is either the blueprint or it doesn’t matter and we base our life on whatever we want it to be.

Mark 7:1-16

We should be taking time each day to spend with God. We are always making excuses and putting off our intimate relationship with Him. When we take our eyes off of Jesus we go from being on the top of the world to falling quickly.

Every body part has a role and is used for God’s kingdom. Will you be the pinky toe? If God calls you to play a seemingly “small” role, will follow His command or fight to play a larger role as the head or the arm?

Challenge: Who is willing to commit and be accountable in REACTION to give at least 15 minutes to God a day? Commit first to God then to each other. We are going to do it together, reading the same thing, and then we will discuss it together.

We have agreed to read Acts together. By next Monday everyone should have read Acts 1. (you can read more if you want) Our next study will be on the apostles.

Grace Alone - Monday, September 21, 2009

“Grace Alone”

Ephesians 2:8-10

John 3:1-15

Matthew 13:1-23 (read this! Jesus really explains it in more detail than all the others)

Additional Scriptures you can read on God’s grace

Zechariah 12:10

Romans 4:16-23

Hebrew 2:9

Revelations 22:21

Grace: unmerited favor; an undeserved gift

Grace can only come from God.

Challenge: to read and know what you believe; to understand; to get to a place of maturity so that we can exercise the faith He has given us.
